Microphone Test

This mic test gives immediate waveform feedback while recording so you can tell whether the microphone is active, weak, distorted or blocked.

How the browser microphone test helps

A short recording is often enough to reveal muffled audio, low gain, broken noise suppression or one-sided microphone failure.

Playback matters as much as capture because it also helps you quickly confirm speaker output before the handover finishes.

Best microphone testing routine

Record a normal speaking sample, then move slightly farther away and speak again. If the level collapses too quickly, the mic may be weak or partially blocked.

On phones and tablets, test in the current orientation and then rotate once, especially if the device has multiple microphones for calls and video recording.

What to test in one minute

Start with a normal speaking sample, then speak more softly and from slightly farther away. This helps you catch weak gain, heavy distortion or a microphone that only sounds acceptable when the device is very close.

If the device has multiple microphones, rotate it or change how you hold it and repeat the sample once. Some issues appear only in one physical position.

How to interpret playback

Listen for crackle, pumping noise reduction, sudden volume drops and a muffled tone. Those are common signs of blocked mic openings, water exposure or damaged audio paths.

If the waveform moves but playback sounds wrong, the microphone may still be capturing while another part of the audio chain is degraded.

FAQ

Why does the waveform move even when the room is quiet?

Most microphones and browsers pick up some ambient noise, so a small amount of waveform activity is normal.

What if recording permission is denied?

You will need to re-enable microphone access in the browser or system settings before this test can work.

Is one short recording enough?

Usually for a quick handover, yes. If the result is borderline, repeat the test in a quieter space and from a second speaking distance.
